The Laramie Project was written through a unique collaboration by Tectonic Theater Project. During the year-and-a-half development of the play, members of the company and I traveled to Laramie, Wyoming, six times to conduct interviews with the people of the town. Matthew is the main character in the play even though he never really appears because he dies before the beginning of the play. Matthew, more commonly known just as Matt, was a gay student killed in Laramie in 1998. He is described by the other characters in the play and the reader is able to see him evolve even though he never appears on stage.
